- The original sneaker which inspired this retro release was designed by the legendary Tinker Hatfield to be the only sneaker an athlete would need to train including playing, lifting weights and running. That sneaker was released in 1987.
- The Nike Air Trainer 1 became popular after tennis legend John McEnroe wore the prototype Nike sent him while winning several tournaments.
- The Air Trainer 1 marked the first in the line of popular cross-training shoes produced by Nike in the 80’s and 90’s including the Air Trainer 3, Nike Air Tech Challenge II (known as “Andre Agassi’s”), and Air Trainer SC (known as “Bo Jackson’s”).
